Was there a significantly reflective surface, like a large glass window or something, behind you when you took this? The people in the foreground appear illuminated by other than the main light source (sun). They stand out from the dark shadowed background buildings. That's so cool.
No there was no extra lighting or reflective surfaces used. What in fact makes them stand out, is the lines in the image specifically those created by the road markings. They create what in is called orthaganol projection which creates a sense of space, distance and scale.
