Kevin Aviance

I met Kevin Aviance when I was about 18-19 years old. It was in Miami Beach, at an after-hours. We met outside in the outdoor patio area and hung out most of the morning. I didn’t see him again until many years later after moving to New York. He is a unique, expressive, and artistic individual and a New York City club scene icon.

I was extremely saddened to hear that he was the victim of a hate crime during our month of pride. I hope that those guys each get sent to a jail cell with a 200lbs lifer with a taste for young bigot booty.

Kevin was leaving the Phoenix lounge in the East Village after a performance when he was attacked by possibly up to 7 homophobic young adults. No one stopped to help him as he was beaten and called derogatory names. Despite the fact that he has a broken jaw that’s been wired shut and other minor injuries, he hopes to recover in time to perform for the upcoming pride event at the end of the month.

I wouldn't expect anything less from him...
